Through the Latin American Chapter, the President requested that the Beckley Foundation:

• Analyse the impact of current prohibitionist drug policies on Guatemala and the wider region;
• Develop and propose a series of alternative drug policy options aimed at reducing the violence and corruption suffered by Guatemala and other countries as a result of the current policies;
• Convene an Advisory Board of the world’s leading experts in order to assist in the development of proposals for reforming national and international drug policies;
• Raise Guatemalan and international public awareness of the urgent need for drug policy reform; and facilitate confidential, high-level drug policy deliberations among Heads of State and their senior representatives.

The Beckley Foundation Latin America Chapter produced two influential reports for the region (Paths for Reform: Proposed Options for Alternative Drug Policies in Guatemala and Illicit Drug Markets and Dimensions of Violence in Guatemala), investigating current trends of drug-related violence and proposing options for alternative drug policies.
